MIFARE DESFire EV3 contactless IC card is the fourth generation of the MIFARE DESFire products family, which is functionally backward compatible with MIFARE DESFire EV2, MIFARE DESFire EV1 and MIFARE DESFire D40. MIFARE DESFire EV3 brings enhanced performance with a greater operating distance, improved transaction speed and higher security compared to EV1/EV2.

 

MIFARE DESFire EV3 offers a new Transaction Timer feature makes it possible to set a maximum time per transaction, so as to prevent a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack where the attacker delays the conclusion of a transaction by keeping the card powered after it left the legitimate reader device.

 

The new Secure Unique NFC (SUN) messaging feature, which also available on NTAG 424 DNA IC, offers a more secure way to maintain data confidentiality and integrity. Each time a card or ticket equipped with the MIFARE DESFire EV3 IC is tapped, the SUN messaging feature generates a unique authentication message. Then the tap-unique URL with its crypto-secure SUN code can be sent to a server for verification.

 

When MIFARE DESFire EV3 card operated in NDEF mode, the Secure Unique NFC messaging feature is compatible with NFC phones and other NFC-enabled devices, making secure authentication of tags and messages a convenient option on widely available devices.
